Message From Chair

Different types of heart diseases can occur in child. Those are congenital heart disease(CHD) and acquired heart disease. Rheumatic heart disease and Kawasaki disease are most common acquired heart diseases in this population. On other hand, CHDs are the most common defect & the leading cause of birth defect related deaths in children. The incidence of CHD in general population is 8 ~ 12/ 1,000 live births.1/3 of neonate with  severe forms of CHD die during the first month of life without treatment.

The cause of CHD is often unknown in most ofthe cases(~ 90%),soit is only partly preventable. Talking about CHD in our part, due to huge lack of human resources, Kathmandu centric services, still have bigproblems with late diagnosis. Therefore raise awareness about CHD is very crucial. CHD Awareness Week is held each year from Feb7-14 to recognize children and adults living with CHD, celebrate their journey and increase public awareness. In this context, interaction program was organizedin Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre(SGNHC), flakes with important messages  were kept inhospital premises, interviews and articles in online media were published. Similarly, Pediatric cardiologists in differentcentres also organized activities(CME, health camp, awareness in social media). Most importantly monthly CME of NEPAS from cardiology chapter was also organized in SGNHC on 10th Feb as a part of activity. As a chapter chair, my heartfelt thanks to NEPAS for giving this opportunity and support.

Lets continue to make efforts to raise awareness and advocacy for child and adultwithCHD.

love everyone’s heart”
